Most insect repellents contain DEET which you are advised not to use on Children under 12 or when in pregnancy (If it isn't safe for kids you have to ask why it is safe for adults). You can't risk reapplying DEET too often and you can't risk getting it near most plastics or synthetic materials – sunglasses, sports equipment, etc – because it's a de-plasticizer (it melts plastic) and if it can do that to plastic you have to wonder what it's doing to your skin!!
